ALLIE AND PETER ENTERED the Hall of Nature and began walking up to Peter’s room. Peter was acting normal now, having cut out the false bravado that he often showed to people he had just met. Allie had known him for years and he knew she would not put up with his nonsense.

“The show earlier was a little unnecessary.” She scolded him.

“I disagree. Shock and awe, missy, shock and awe.” He said, beginning to strut again.

“Really? You are so....” She stopped mid-sentence. He looked back at her with a questioning look.

She pointed to his room door which was slightly ajar. And then to the other doors in the hallway. They were all open, just a bit. And from one of them, they could see a hand peeking out, lying flat on the floor. There was blood on it.

With a sudden realization, they noticed that the place was empty. There were no sounds, no evidence that any other person was home in this entire place.

“I think we should go.” she said, looking around nervously.

He held his hands out and they ignited. Flames raced along his palms and formed balls of fire. It rippled with heat. “Alec? Henry?” he shouted into the silent hallway.

Two forms moved out from a room at the end. They looked like night hunters. They even had their weapons. The two of them moved towards them and drew their swords.

Allie put her hands up and they both froze in place. “Got ‘em.” She stared at the figures down the hall with wild determination on her face.

“Time to burn.” Peter seethed and launched the fireballs at the stilled night hunters. The balls of flame exploded on contact and their outfits burned away. Which revealed black, oily scales underneath. The flames did not do any damage to whatever these things were.

Peter’s face reacted in shock. “Uh...feeling kind of worthless here. They can’t burn.”

A brush of wind blew past Allie and Peter. They both barely had time to notice the real night ranger Halek moving swiftly down the hall. He was a blur of movement, darting through the shadows. The air blurred in front of the two figures and their heads fell to the ground.

“Daft nonces.” Halek scolded the lifeless bodies.

“You guys are you okay?” asked Monica.

Allie jumped a good foot in the air, as did Peter. Jake and Monica were standing beside them, weapons drawn and held out to protect them both. To them, it was like they appeared out of thin air.

“Holy crap! I didn’t even hear you!” Allie yelled out.

Peter laughed. “Oh my gosh you should see your face!” He was pointing at Allie.

“Sorry about that. We were trying to move quietly. Had a feeling you were in trouble.” Said Monica.

“We encountered the same where we were.” Jake was only slightly out of breath.

Allie looked sternly at Peter. “How can you laugh at a time like this? Look at your fellow shaman.”

He got serious quickly. “It’s a defense mechanism. Being humorous helps me cope. Because this sucks.” He said, sweeping his arm towards his fallen brethren.
